The History of Bhola Govt.College

Bhola govt. College, The lighthouse of education in Bhola, has been illuminating since its establishment in 1962. This instiution has been playing the most significant role in providing opportunites for higher education among the students coming from island, rural and semi-rural background at an affordable means. Now it offers Bachelor Degree,Honours Degree and Masters Degree. It also runs HSC program. Several thousand students study here.

The background of this college is eventful. Bhola, the largest island of Bangladesh, is bounded by the rivers of lower Meghna and Shahbajpur Channel to The to east and by The Tetulia and Kalbadar to the west .It was a detached and remote island and it had no road connection with the mainland of the country. There was no institution for higher education in Bhola and so students had to go a long distance by Gahona boat little ferry boat known as launch . But it was too much risky and life threatening during the rainy and stormy seasons. These distressed and afflicting scenarios awakened some patrons of learning and they took an enterprise to establish a college in Bhola. In 1957-58 they tried but it was an unsuccessful attempt, In 1961,Ak Dutt Chowdhury the then DC of Barisal,in a meeting with the local elite of Bhola decided to establish the college and Altajer Rahman, a local businessman and Abdul Gafur of Charfession donated for the college.

To whom the college specially indebted to is Abdul Aziz . In 1962,he Joined Bhola Mahakuma as SDO and palyed the most vital role for the establishment of the college. He organized a local committee of public instruction with the help of the local people and elites including Altazer Rahman,Solaiman Mollah,Tofazzel Mollah, Hazi khorshed Alam,IliasMiah Master, Habibur Rahman Talukder, Ahmed Hossain Miah, Shaheb Ali Daroga and Mokles Miah. They started the college and decided to procure a piece of land for college campus.Now its area is about 16 acres. Abdul Huq,the Headmaster of charfession High school, was appointed as the first Principal.For the first time the college admitted the students of class xi, session1962-63 under The Intermediate and secondary Education Board, Jessore, and the class started at nearby A.Rab High School. In 1966 The Degree course started under the affiliation of Dhaka University.With the establishment of the college , Abdul Aziz, created a fund and collected grants and donations for the college . The college emerged as a leading college of this area under the strong leadership of Principal Jakir Hossain (1967). But during the Liberation War, the academic and other development works were seriously hampered. The college suffered from acute economic crisis. Principal Aminul Islam Mozumder (1972) successfully over came that crisis. In 1979, The college was nationalized as Bhola Govt. college,Under the affiliation of National University the college starts Honour’s course in 1996-97. Now the college is one of the largest and leading colleges in Bangladesh. At present it runs HSC, Graduate and Post-Graduate level education.
